What is Page Rank also known as PR?

Page rank is rating of your web site given by Google between 1 to 10, 10 being the best.
In theory, higher rank means more popular/important than lower rank.

Google measure this by looking at links to your site from other sites.
More relative links you have, better.

Some say page rank is not that important. Really?
I believe it's very important. Read on and you'll see why :-)

So, your site will show up high on search engines if you have high page rank?
NO. Search Engine position do not rely on page rank alone.
No one can give you clear answer for this specific question.
However...

Higher page rank will help your site to get more quality relative links. It's not so easy to get link from other sites when your site's page rank is low. It's much easier when your site's page rank is high.

More relative quality link you have, better result for your search engine position.
It's easier to get more links if your page rank is high.
Therefore, Page Rank is very important.

So, what is your site's page rank?
Look to your left or click on "TOOLS" on top menu.
SEOtog.com has many tools for you to use.

You can download and install Google's Toolbar to your browser.
It's at http://toolbar.Google.com

After installation, you can see tiny green and white bar on your browser's toolbar.
It look like this:

You can see the page rank for the current page when you bring your mouse pointer over it.
I consider any site with page rank lower than PR3 as too low.
I tend to respect sites with page rank higher than PR5 because I know how hard it is to get more than PR5.

Just for testing purpose or if you need web master's resources, check http://www.TechWench.com
You'll see this site has page rank of PR6.
Yes, TechWench.com is our site, shameless plugin :-D

However, low page rank do not necessarily mean site is bad. It could be great site, but, just new to get page rank.
Google seem to update page rank every 3 months or so. Some sites do not get page rank updated for up to 6 months.
Heh, SEOtog.com is VERY VERY NEW!
We are expecting to be PR5 on next google page rank update :-D
